Blip vs Pandora – Modern Methods of Music Discovery

I’ve heard people talking about using one of these versus the other. That is the completely wrong approach. They are completely different tools. I mean, they are both music-centered, but that is about the extent of their commonalities. I’ll explain…

Pandora
“Song by song, the music-loving technologists at Pandora scrutinize
and document hundreds of notes on characteristics ranging from melody,
to arrangement, to instrumentation. They don’t care about genre or what
the bands looks like, but only about the qualities of each individual
song.

When you do a search for an artist or a song, they compare the
database of hundreds of notes against all the songs in the database.
Then, based on all of the commonalities and differences, Pandora puts
together a playlist of songs and begins the show.”

Blip
“A blip is a combination of 1) a song and 2) a short message that accompanies it. The way you create a blip is to first search for a song that you want to hear (or a song that you want your listeners to hear), then add a short message (under 150 characters), finally you submit it. Submitting a blip is also referred to as ‘blipping’, so from here on out, when you read ‘he blipped my favorite track’ it means ‘he submitted a blip that had my favorite song attached’.”

Friends Till The End
So, as you can see, these are different tools that can work together in finding you great new music. Pandora creates scientifically dynamic playlists based on key song features. Blip.fm’s content is user generated.

You can use Pandora to find music that is similar to songs or artists you like. It’s pretty advanced stuff that goes into building these playlists.

You can use Blip.fm to listen to song by song playlists that other blip.fm users have created. Also, when you blip, it can be setup to post as a tweet on your twitter account with a link to the song.
