How many times have you come out of a movie theater disappointed because your expectations were not met? I think expectations are the number one destroyer of good movies. Some movies have had to wait years for people to truly appreciate them for what they are.
If you waste your time wishing Cloverfield was more like Godzilla, then you miss out on a monster movie made from a single point of view, which immerses you in the situation. You have to be careful experiencing something with a head full of expectations. When you do that, you end up comparing everything to what you want it to be rather than just enjoying it for what it is.
Sprite’s Gross When You Think It’s Coke
When you are drinking a coke, and you mistakenly grab your friend’s drink and take a gulp of sprite, why do you spit it out? You wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that sprite is a bad drink just because you expected it to be coke, would you?
Expectations: don’t let them spoil the perfectly good.
A Victim of Expectation
People walked out during the premiere. Peter Howell, in his review for the Toronto Star, wrote, “It’s hard to believe that this is the work of a team that won an Oscar last year for the original screenplay of Fargo. There’s a large amount of profanity in the movie, which seems a weak attempt to paper over dialogue gaps.” With a budget of $15 million, it only grossed $17 million domestically. The Guardian criticized the film as “a bunch of ideas shoveled into a bag and allowed to spill out at random. The film is infuriating, and will win no prizes.
You’ve probably heard of The Big Lebowski starring Jeff Bridges as “The Dude”. This film is now so widely appreciated that there are festivals held in its honor. Entertainment Weekly ranked it 8th on their Funniest Movies of the Past 25 Years list. Empire magazine ranked the Dude #7 in their “The 100 Greatest Movie Characters” poll.
