This guy was decked in jewelry. Â His neck was something for Mr. T to envy. Â Both of his hands were weighed down by rings; one went across three of his fingers spelling out his name, Jose. Â It looked like monogrammed brass knuckles. Â There must be a correlation with how slicked back your hair is, how many inches of unbottoned shirt across your neck, and how sleazy you come across. Â That was Jose, and he was my client.
He kept distracting me while I was working with him by trying to chat me up about random stuff, then came the pitch. Â
“I see you’re wearing a ring.” Â (Note: I’m not a big jewelry guy myself. Â The only thing I wear is a ring on my right thumb. Â I’ve worn it for over 13 years because it was a going away gift a group of friends gave me when I moved.)Â
“How about I make you a ring like mine?” Â He pointed at his Jose brass knuckle rings. Â ”But with your name, of course.”
“Nah. Â No thanks. Â So let’s get back to this.”
So he tells me that he’s really into jewelry. Â No, you, really? Â He even makes jewelry on the side and sells them. Â I can’t remember what he quoted me for my own personalized rings.
Don’t let this opportunity get away
I had about five minutes left before I was done with Jose when it hit me. Â My encounter with him was funny, but what could I do to have him make a lasting impression. Â Plus, I wanted to tell Brad all about him. Â I knew we’d have a good laugh about it.
“All right, Jose. Â It was nice to meet you.”
“You too, Angel. Â You sure you don’t want me to make you a ring?”
“I’m sure. Â Wait! Â You know what, why don’t you draw for me what the ring would look like so that I can think it over. Â Maybe even show it to a few people to see if they’re interested in wearing their egos…names too.”
“Sure thing. Â I can even play off your name and put wings on it. Â If you get me a little battery and hinges I can make it so that the wings flap. Â That will be more of a necklace.”
I whipped out a little pad of paper and handed it to him along with a pen.
Then he drew this for me
