I was 9 years old then. The film, Dick Tracy, had been out for about a year, but it was fresh on my mind. I visited Montgomery Ward with my father one Saturday afternoon. Something there would allow me to actualize any fantasies I had of becoming a great detective, just like Dick. In the boy’s section, amid the Bugle Boy pants and silk shirts, I found it. It was a beige London Fog trench coat.

Now, I don’t claim to know the origin of this phrase. Growing up Latino, I’ve just been exposed to this phrase so much by family and friends, that it was just filed away into the lexicon of my subconscious. I just accept it without giving it a second thought. But when I actively think about and evaluate the phrase, it turns out to be funny.

All you have to do to understand certain words and phrases is to hear them used in context once or twice, then you get it. So, rather than try to explain what this phrase means, I’ll just show you a few examples of it’s use. Okay? The phrase:

This guy was decked in jewelry. His neck was something for Mr. T to envy. Both of his hands were weighed down by rings; one went across three of his fingers spelling out his name, Jose. It looked like monogrammed brass knuckles. There must be a correlation with how slicked back your hair is, how many inches of unbottoned shirt across your neck, and how sleazy you come across. That was Jose, and he was my client.

Despite its praise as a super-duper food, quinoa just tastes great. Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wa or Kee-no-ah) is a grain-like seed that can be cooked like rice. With the water, and the boiling and the oh golly! After cooking, it has a fluffy texture, slightly nutty flavor, and has the consistency of rice. Most folks say it looks like couscous. I had just eaten it plain before, but then I got turned on to various tasty meals, even desserts, that can be prepared with quinoa.
