Imminent Doom All Around: The Tunguska Event

In the movie Ghostbusters, Ray Stantz says, “You have a been a participant in the biggest interdimensional crossrip since the Tunguska blast of 1909.”  It actually happened in 1908.  Ray was off by a year, but when you’re a Ghostbuster, you’re allowed to be off by a year.

The Tunguska Event.  The Tunguska Explosion.  The Tunguska Blast.  Call it what you will.  It’s interesting because it poses questions about the nature of our vulnerability on this planet.  Earth is just floating out in space.  If you think about it, it would be really easy for us to get wiped out by a number of things.  What happened June 30, 1908 was just one of those things.

How Short Circuit Got Me Into My First Fight

Something wonderful has happened...No.5 is alive.

Maybe most of you know the movie as Johnny Five.  Yeah, Short Circuit,  the 1986 film about a robot who gains the capacity to think, live, and love.  While playing with some kid, I quoted this movie. Later, this kid wanted to rip my head off.

Amid the rocky landscape of Oracle, Arizona lies this colossal structure, Biosphere 2.  It happens to be the largest closed system ever constructed.  Built between 1987 and 1991, Biosphere 2 was meant to facilitate researching the possibility of space colonization.   I’m sure most of you are familiar with Biosphere 1 (Earth to the layman), upon which this biosphere is based.

Unbelievable Stories – 2 Tall Tales

Sunset Gunshow by hrtmnstrfr, on Flickr

Whoppers, tall tales, BS: we’ve all heard our share.  There comes a time when someone tells you a tale so ridiculous, you don’t really care if it’s true or not.  You let it be.  You let it soak in.  You make eye contact, smile, and nod; inwardly greatful that someone shared such a thing with you.  Something you can share with others.

Temporarily Alter Your Taste Buds

I was in my kitchen finishing cutting a few pieces of fruit: lemons, grapefruit, kiwi, and lime.  On the table was a single packet.  It looked just like the packet in the picture to the left, but it said “Mysterious Fruit Tablets” instead.  Ominous, I know.  After having rolled around one pink tablet in my mouth until it dissolved, I  took a bite of a lemon, rind and all.  It tasted more like a sweet orange than anything else.  Next was a piece of grapefruit.  Same effect.  It was sweet all over.  The kiwi? No tartness.  Lime?  Extremely sweet.

You may ask if I dabble in the black arts.  I don’t.  Although, I did try my hand at alchemy for a summer.  Find out what I used to achieve this sour-t0-sweet effect, and where you can find some.
