Maybe most of you know the movie as Johnny Five. Â Yeah, Short Circuit, Â the 1986 film about a robot who gains the capacity to think, live, and love. Â While playing with some kid, I quoted this movie. Later, this kid wanted to rip my head off.

Amid the rocky landscape of Oracle, Arizona lies this colossal structure, Biosphere 2. Â It happens to be the largest closed system ever constructed. Â Built between 1987 and 1991, Biosphere 2 was meant to facilitate researching the possibility of space colonization. Â I’m sure most of you are familiar with Biosphere 1 (Earth to the layman), upon which this biosphere is based. Â Â Â

Whoppers, tall tales, BS: we’ve all heard our share. Â There comes a time when someone tells you a tale so ridiculous, you don’t really care if it’s true or not. Â You let it be. Â You let it soak in. Â You make eye contact, smile, and nod; inwardly greatful that someone shared such a thing with you. Â Something you can share with others.Â

I was in my kitchen finishing cutting a few pieces of fruit: lemons, grapefruit, kiwi, and lime. Â On the table was a single packet. Â It looked just like the packet in the picture to the left, but it said “Mysterious Fruit Tablets” instead. Â Ominous, I know. Â After having rolled around one pink tablet in my mouth until it dissolved, I Â took a bite of a lemon, rind and all. Â It tasted more like a sweet orange than anything else. Â Next was a piece of grapefruit. Â Same effect. Â It was sweet all over. Â The kiwi? No tartness. Â Lime? Â Extremely sweet.
You may ask if I dabble in the black arts. Â I don’t. Â Although, I did try my hand at alchemy for a summer. Â Find out what I used to achieve this sour-t0-sweet effect, and where you can find some.

Imminent Doom All Around: The Tunguska Event

In the movie Ghostbusters, Ray Stantz says, “You have a been a participant in the biggest interdimensional crossrip since the Tunguska blast of 1909.” Â It actually happened in 1908. Â Ray was off by a year, but when you’re a Ghostbuster, you’re allowed to be off by a year.
The Tunguska Event. Â The Tunguska Explosion. Â The Tunguska Blast. Â Call it what you will. Â It’s interesting because it poses questions about the nature of our vulnerability on this planet. Â Earth is just floating out in space. Â If you think about it, it would be really easy for us to get wiped out by a number of things. Â What happened June 30, 1908 was just one of those things.
